What the devil meant for evil, God has always turned for good.
The phrase "Best Stay Woke" was first introduced by folk singer Huddie William "Leadbelly" Ledbetter in 1938. It served as a cautionary call to Black Americans in the South, inspired by the harrowing events surrounding the Scottsboro Boys—the nine teenage Black boys falsely accused and unjustly imprisoned in Scottsboro, Alabama, in 1931.
Leadbelly’s phrase, "Best Stay Woke," was deeply rooted in biblical principles, drawing from 1 Peter 5:8: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." Both the biblical verse and Leadbelly’s words carry the same urgent warning: stay alert, stay aware. Together, they remind us of the enduring need for vigilance in the face of evil.
Standing for truth has always required courage—whether in 1938, when Leadbelly coined the phrase, or today. This collection is dedicated to those with the strength to stand firm in their convictions and the resilience to uphold the truth.
In an era where the term "woke" has been distorted—twisted into a slur on the extreme right and politicized on all sides—we reclaim its original power and purpose. With pride and purpose, we renew its true meaning: a call to awareness, justice, and unwavering truth for this generation and those to come.
