The phrase “Stay Woke” carries deep roots in our collective history, first emerging in 1938 through the voice of blues musician Huddie Ledbetter, famously known as Lead Belly. His protest song, Scottsboro Boys, reflected on the 1931 case where nine Black teenagers were falsely accused of raping two white women in Scottsboro, Alabama.
Lead Belly explained the inspiration behind his powerful lyrics: “I made this little song about down there… So I advise everybody, be a little careful—best stay woke, keep their eyes open.”
For generations, “Stay Woke” served as a profound reminder in African American households—a call to vigilance, wisdom, and care. Sadly, today its meaning has been overshadowed and distorted by political rhetoric and misuse.
